The Best Latex Mattress Reviews

If you are shopping for a latex mattress, you will notice that there are fewer available models/brands as opposed to innersprings or memory foam mattresses. This type of mattress is more expensive to produce, thus, availability is limited. Your best bet to know more about latex mattresses is to search online because they are rarely present in mattress showrooms.

A latex mattress is manufactured by utilizing the sap of a rubber tree. This material is very eco-friendly so if you are a “green” buyer and prefer organic materials, this is the best mattress option. Latex is also great for anyone that is health conscious or susceptible to getting allergies because it is anti-microbial, naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.

Pros

  • Can contour to your body very well, although not as good as a memory foam.
  • Great for pain relief.
  • Unlike memory foams, it is not temperature sensitive so you won’t sink into the mattress, making movement easier.
  • Limits motion transfer if you share your mattress with someone.
  • If you prefer to use organic products, a latex mattress is your best choice.
  • Naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.
  • The most durable mattress type and will last a long time with proper care.
  • You will not experience any noise as you sleep as foams don’t produce noise.
  • There are customizable product lines that you can choose from to be able to get the best level of comfort and support.

Cons

  • Latex mattresses are usually very expensive but there are affordable models.
  • Limited availability in retail stores and even online.
  • It can produce heat while sleeping but not as much as a memory foam.
  • They are very heavy so if you are changing sheets, rotating or transporting your mattress, you will have difficulty. Since they are heavy, a well constructed support base (foundation) is required.
  • Some consumers report off-gassing but this is a rare occurrence and is mostly present in latex over foam mattresses.

This mattress is quite expensive but if you compare it to other all latex mattresses, this is still relatively cheap. One of the features of this mattress is that you can choose the comfort level of the comfort layer upon purchase and if you are not satisfied, you can contact them to have it exchanged.

If you don’t want to spend too much money but you would like a mattress with natural latex, this is the one to get.

Best Hybrid Latex Mattresses

If you want a latex mattress but an all-latex mattress is out of your budget, a hybrid latex mattress may just be the best option for you. These are more budget friendly because latex foam is only used in one layer of the mattress, either in the comfort layer or in the support layer. These are cheaper to manufacture than all latex mattresses but you will still get the benefit of latex foam.

This is the best hybrid latex mattress that we can recommend.

Dromma Bed

dromma-bedThe Dromma Bed follows the bed-in-a-box model and it is currently only available online. One thing that separates it from other bed-in-a-box mattresses is that it is 12 inches thick and it also uses natural latex as opposed to others that use either blended or synthetic. Natural latex is the best kind of latex as it is more durable and it is more eco friendly and it performs better in almost all areas of importance.

The Dromma Bed comes with a 12 year warranty and it also has a 200 night trial, more than enough time to decide if you like the mattress or not. The queen size mattress is priced at $849.

  • Latex: 1.5″ Natural Latex
  • Additional Layers: 2.5″ Gel Memory Foam, 8″ High Density Support Foam
  • Fabric Cover: Removable cover

Below the latex layer is a 2.5 inch soy based gel memory foam that acts as an additional support and it also provides body contouring. The 8 inches of high density foam provides very good support. All in all, this is a very solid mattress and we have to say that in its class (memory foam + latex hybrid), this is definitely the best one.

Lucid Plush Memory Foam and Latex Mattress

Lucid Plush Memory Foam and LatexThe Lucid 16″ Plush Memory Foam and Latex Mattress by Linen Spa is a great mattress if you want to experience both memory foam and latex. The Lucid brand is one of the more popular mattress brands on Amazon simply because their products offer great value. The 16″ mattress is considered a soft – medium firm mattress so if you prefer your mattress to be on the softer side, this is a good choice.

  • Comfort Layer: 1″ 3lb Quilted Bamboo Infused Memory Foam, 3″ 3lb Plush Memory Foam
  • Support Layer: 2″ Latex Foam, 10″ High Density Base
  • Fabric Cover: Removable Bamboo Cover
  • Firmness: Soft – Medium Firm
  • Thickness: 16″
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal-King
  • Product Page: Click Here

The construction of the mattress includes both memory foam and latex and supported by a thick 10″ high density base. The bamboo infused memory foam helps in preventing the mattress from getting too hot as you sleep. As an added benefit, it is also good for people with sensitive skin. The latex layer is a natural dunlop latex that prevents you from sinking in too deep.

Casper Mattress

Casper mattressThe Casper mattress was launched in 2014 and it has been well received by consumers as evidenced by the hundreds of reviews on Amazon. It is a latex over foam mattress but instead of just latex over standard polyfoam, it has memory foam in the comfort layer. The Casper mattress has only one firmness level and consumers say that it is on the firm side. If you like your mattress to be firm, this is a good option. It is made in the USA and it has 10 years warranty.

  • Latex: 1.5″ Synthetic Dunlop Latex
  • Additional Layers: 1.5″ 4.0lbs Memory Foam, 6.5″ Polyfoam Support Base
  • Fabric Cover: Polyester/Polypropylene Zipper Cover
  • Firmness: Firm
  • Thickness: 9″
  • Available Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal-King
  • Product Page: Click Here

Casper has 1.5 inches of synthetic Dunlop latex and 1.5 inches of 4lbs memory foam in the comfort layer. Much like the S-Bed, it is designed to have the properties of both latex and memory foam and make them work together to cover each others’ weaknesses. It has 6.5 inches of polyfoam split into two layers, a transitional layer and the support base.

The mattress is designed to be the “perfect” mattress, think Goldilocks, not too soft and not too firm. It is a good thing that they are striving for perfection but the reality is that people will have different preferences when it comes to the firmness of their mattress. Most consumers report that the Casper mattress is a bit on the firm side so if you prefer a firm mattress, this might be for you.

Latex Mattress Guide

Types of Latex

There are two types of latex used in a latex mattress, natural and synthetic. The main difference between natural and synthetic latex is: natural latex is derived from the sap of a rubber tree while synthetic latex is man-made using a chemical blend of styrene and butadiene.

The latex used in a latex mattress can either be all-natural, synthetic or blended (a mix of natural and synthetic). A latex mattress with 100% natural latex is much more expensive and is not as widely available as ones that use blended latex. Natural latex performs better than synthetic or blended ones in almost all areas; durability, longevity, no off-gassing and less chance of developing body impressions. The only issue with all-natural latex is that it can be very expensive and in rare occurrences, it can cause allergic reactions to people who are allergic to latex.

If you are shopping for a latex mattress and you see that a particular mattress is advertised as a “natural latex”, make sure that it is indeed all natural because more often than not, these are blended latex mattresses and the seller just chose to advertise it as “natural” because technically, it does contain a percentage of natural latex.

Latex Processing

There are two ways to process a latex mattress, the Dunlop process or Talalay process. Both latex types can be processed using either the dunlop method or the talalay method to produce a latex mattress.

The talalay process is a more recent method in processing latex mattresses. It has more steps than the dunlop process so latex mattresses produced using this method are more expensive. To start, the latex is poured into a mold and then air is extracted via vacuum sealing. This results in a more consistent cell structure. After that, it is frozen so that the particles will stay in place. The end product is more consistent and refined so it tends to be on the soft side with regards to comfort.

The dunlop process is the simpler process and it is the older of the two. It has been used to produce latex mattresses for decades. To start, the latex is poured into a mold and it is then baked. After cooling, it is removed from the mold and that is the final product. The latex mold is denser so it is firmer.

Which one is better? It depends on your needs. If you want a firmer mattress, you might want a dunlop latex. If you want a softer one, talalay is your best bet. You should also consider your budget, talalay latex is usually more expensive but that doesn’t mean that a dunlop latex is inferior. At the end of the day, they are still both latex and you will still enjoy the advantages that a latex mattress offers.

Latex Mattress Builds

A latex mattress can either be all-latex, latex over foam or foam over latex. Here are their differences.

All-Latex

An all latex mattress is exactly as it sounds, a mattress made up entirely of latex. The mattress could either be composed of two layers or just one. Some of the advantages of an all latex mattress are durability and the ability to give better support because latex performs better than regular polyurethane foam in both categories. It is also the best type of bed to use on an adjustable base because latex is more flexible than regular foam or spring. One drawback is that it can be very expensive, especially if the mattress is thick.

Latex over Foam

A latex over foam is a mattress that has a latex comfort layer and an additional layer of either memory foam or polyfoam or a combination of all three types of foam. This is a great option if you think that an all-latex mattress is too expensive for you because you can still enjoy the benefits of latex such as pain relief, comfort and motion isolation. It is the most inexpensive type of latex mattress because the latex layer is thinner. It is durable as long as the foam used in the support layer is of high quality. A common issue with this type of mattress is off-gassing, usually caused by the polyfoam or memory foam.

Foam over Latex

Foam over latex is constructed with a thinner layer of foam and a thicker base of latex. This is more expensive than a latex over foam but not as expensive as an all latex, depending on the thickness of the latex. Some of the issues with a foam over latex mattress are off-gassing and body impressions, due to the polyurethane foam comfort layer.

Firmness

Indentation Load Deflection or ILD is used to measure the firmness of a latex mattress. The lower the number, the softer the mattress and the higher the number, the more firm it is. An ILD of 19 and below is on the softer side, 20-28 is medium firm and 29 and above is considered firm.

Support Base for Latex

Latex, just like memory foam, is designed to be placed on top of a flat, solid surface without any “give”. A slat foundation wherein the slats are close to each other is good if you need to add height to the mattress. A platform bed with either slats or plywood is also acceptable.

Latex, especially an all latex mattress, is the best type of mattress for use on an adjustable base because it is the most flexible type of foam.

An important thing to note when buying a latex mattress is that it is very heavy so a strong, solid and sturdy bed frame or foundation is a must.

As for our recommendations, here are some that we really like; foundations, platform beds and adjustable beds.

Protecting your Mattress

As you already know, latex is the most expensive mattress type and if you bought one, it only makes sense to make sure that it is protected. A mattress protector is recommended but optional. Mattress protectors can extend the life of your mattress by preventing it from being soiled, from sweat, dust, liquid spills and more.

Summary

A latex mattress can be very expensive but that price is justified when you think of all the benefits that you will get. It is the best in providing pain relief, durability and longevity. It has the body contouring properties of memory foam without the “sinking” feeling and the springiness and bounciness of an innerspring mattress. It is the most balanced out of all the mattress types. We hope that these latex mattress reviews have been helpful in your search for a new mattress.
